May’s Go Skate Cape Event will be taking place on the last Sunday of this month, the 26th of May 2013 at N1 City parking lots. This is an ‘unofficial’ open, free event and everyone is welcome to join to stand the chance of taking POLL Position winning GSC’s game of SKATE. The meeting spot is outside Continental Tyres and Automark  in N1 City.

If you’ve been to the Game we hosted in 2011 then you’ll know you don’t want to miss the opportunity to roll with your homies and have a killer day out. Go Skate Cape initiatives are not about the prizes but about the skateboarding!

On the morning of the 4th of May a couple of the Pretoria heads woke up with only one thing on their minds in “we’re laying some cement and building things today”. The original plans were to smoothen out some edges in the newest edition to the ongoing list of Centurion ditches. This plan was however foiled as upon further inspection I saw that those ditches were already occupied with builders filling up the spaces inbetween the concrete slabs of the ditch. A phone call was made to notify the rest and after about 10 minutes I received a call back with the words “we’re building a quarter at Skinner”.

After finalising plans, everyone cruised through to Skinner. Hartmut Martin carried most of the supplies including the most important part being the framework, cut from his indoor mini a while ago. With only a small amount of bricks, some bags of ready-mix cement and a couple of buckets of water, we eagerly started building without knowing what the final product would look like. The bricks ran out but we were in luck as after about 20 minutes of venturing out into the streets of Pretoria, Hartmut’s bakkie returned with a lot of bricks from a rubble load around the corner from Skinner. The same was done when the building sand started getting low. With the much appreciated help from the kids of Pretoria the quarter started taking shape. Along with Hartmut, me, Deon Fourie and Stuart Walker we each took turns to mix cement, lay bricks, drink beers all while having a good time. We carried on building into the night and only left after dark.

We returned early the next monring to finish what we had started. With an Extra 10 bags of ready-mix bought and being joined by Bevan Richards, we again started the mixing process. With the foundations finished the night before we could jump straight to laying and smoothing out the cement into the filled up frame. 3 hours later and we were finished. The cement was left to dry all in time for what followed the next Saturday.

The power of Facebook was used to it’s full potential with Deon creating an epic event called “The Skinner Skate, Braai en Lawaai” . Close to 20 cars pulled up at Skinner with dudes and girls from Pretoria and Johannesburg coming through for what was to be an awesome day of skating filled with good vibes, filming filming lines, first time tricks on the new quarter and hammers (both tech and gnar). Beers flowed, meat was on the grills, smoke was in the air, music was blairing from the cars, kids were amped. There was even a dude filming the skating for a project with a camera that i’m sure was worth quite a bit.

‘Tech Session’ was a skateboarding competition hosted by Red Bull and Jean-marc Johannes at Salesians skatepark in Cape Town South Africa. It was a “lines contest” format where there was a maximum of four obstacles to throw down a line. The winner of the contest was well-known SA skater Khulu Dlamini and the competition was supported by Nixon, Globe Footwear, Almost Skateboards & Africa Skate.
